BOSCO INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (BISS)
In light of the Salesians longstanding commitment to educating, rehabilitating, and protecting vulnerable youth and children, establishing an exclusive Research and Documentation Centre dedicated to youth and children was deemed essential. To address this need, the Salesian Province of Bangalore, along with the Young at Risk (YaR) initiatives in the country, decided to seta up an institution that could contribute to the YaR sector through documentation,
publication, capacity building, research and networking.
Bosco Institute of Social Sciences (BISS) was established as a Silver Jubilee (2003-2004)
memorial of the Salesian Province of Bangalore. Since 2004, BISS has organized several
seminars and training programmes.
Two batches of a ten-month residential training programme for students appearing for the
Civil Services Examinations (such as Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign Service, etc.) were held. Over two decades, BISS has been engaged in a country-wide data gathering exercise, which was finally converted into a Directory and
Resource Book, viz, National YaR Directory India—2012.
Substantial progress has been made on the documentation front, too. The Institute has been able to write hundreds of pages on some of the most important social intervention ventures, such as Snehabhavan—Palluruthy, BOSCO—Bangalore, and Social Service Guild—Kristu Jyoti College. The Institute has also prepared and published BOSCO, Bangalore’s Annual Report for 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13.
In 2007, the Don Bosco Forum for Young at Risk India entrusted the responsibility of the country-wide Documentation and Publication of YaR activities to the Province of Bangalore and has decided to set up the National YaR Documentation and Publication Centre under the Bosco Institute of Social Sciences (BISS), Bangalore. BISS also undertook and completed a country-wide research study on the impact of the Salesian Technical Training in India for BB Tech India between 2011-12.
On May 24, 2024, Bosco Institute of Social Sciences (BISS) was relocated to Don Bosco College, KR Puram, Bengaluru, from its previous location in Indiranagar, Bengaluru. In line
with its original objectives as the Research and Development arm of the Salesian Province of Bangalore, the institute will now also function as the Research and Development wing of Don Bosco College. The Institute aims to foster innovation and academic growth and contribute to the institution’s overall development. The objectives of the Institute are:
- Encouraging Innovation and Research: Encourage faculty members and students to take on innovative projects, conduct experiments, and engage in scholarly activities, promoting a research culture.
- Collaboration with Industry: Establish partnerships with industries and other institutions for collaborative research projects. These partnerships provide opportunities for real-world applications of research and internships for students.
