ST.JOHN BOSCO
St. John Bosco (1815–1888), lovingly known as Don Bosco, was a Roman Catholic priest, educator, and visionary who dedicated his life to the holistic formation of young people. In 1859, he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) in Turin, Italy, with a mission to serve the young—especially the poor and vulnerable.
Don Bosco believed that education is not merely instruction, but accompaniment. He was a guide, mentor, teacher, and above all, a loving father to the youth entrusted to him. His famous words continue to inspire us: “It is not enough to love the young; they must know they are loved.”
The Preventive System: An Education of the Heart
Don Bosco developed an educational philosophy known as the Preventive System, a revolutionary alternative to punitive models of education in the 19th century. Rather than correcting through fear and punishment, he proposed an approach rooted in:
- Reason – encouraging critical thinking, dialogue, and responsible freedom.
- Religion – nurturing spiritual awareness, ethical responsibility, and joyful faith.
- Loving-Kindness – building authentic relationships through empathy, presence, and compassion.
Today, this system continues to evolve. It moves from merely being “preventive” to becoming expressive—creating safe, empowering spaces where young people can discover their identity, develop their talents, and flourish with confidence.
Don Bosco was also a master communicator. Through storytelling, theatre, music, sports, good-night talks, and personal presence, he created a vibrant educational atmosphere. His method anticipated today’s emphasis on Social Emotional Learning (SEL), media education, and peace education.
Above all, Don Bosco was a builder of peace. His approach was inherently non-violent and deeply inclusive—welcoming youth of all backgrounds, cultures, and faiths, with a preferential option for the poor and marginalized.
At Don Bosco College, KR Puram, we strive to embody this same spirit—forming young minds and hearts for responsible leadership, service, and transformative peace-building.
