Students from the Department of Social Work at Don Bosco College, KR Puram, Bengaluru, made a remarkable contribution to community development by raising ₹1,00,000 to support marginalized women engaged in agarbatti packaging. Shiny Veronica and Jerry Christopher undertook this initiative as part of their Concurrent Fieldwork Programme (Semester IV – January 2024) in collaboration with the Brothers Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS).
Following a comprehensive community assessment, the students identified the pressing need for a safe and secure shelter for women workers, whose livelihoods were adversely affected by poor working conditions, especially during the rainy season. In response, they developed a detailed project proposal advocating the construction of a shelter to provide a protected workspace, safeguard products, and improve overall working conditions.
Demonstrating strong leadership, commitment, and social responsibility, the students successfully raised funds through dedicated fundraising initiatives. Their efforts not only reflected effective teamwork and planning but also made a meaningful impact on improving the lives and livelihoods of the beneficiaries. The project was carried out under the guidance of Mr. Infant Joel, whose mentorship played a key role in its successful execution.
The initiative received formal appreciation from BIRDS, recognizing the students’ dedication and contribution to social welfare. This achievement stands as a powerful example of service-learning, showcasing how academic knowledge can be translated into impactful action that empowers communities and promotes sustainable social development.
