Students Explore Machine Learning in Guest Lecture

On September 23, 2024, the Department of Computer Applications hosted an online guest lecture titled “Learning to Learn: ML & DL Fundamentals for the Curious Mind.” The event aimed to provide students with a foundational knowledge of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) and explore their applications across various domains.

The session began with a welcome speech by Ms. D. Dilshana, the student secretary of the BCA department association, who introduced the speaker, Dr. Shilpa Suresh. Dr. Shilpa, a faculty member in the Department of Mechatronics at Manipal Institute of Technology and a Senior Member of IEEE, shared her expertise in the field.

In her lecture, Dr. Shilpa offered a comprehensive introduction to ML and DL, covering fundamental concepts and algorithms used in these areas. She discussed algorithms such as supervised and unsupervised learning and deep neural networks and their applications in healthcare, finance, self-driving cars, and geospatial analysis.

Dr. Shilpa emphasized the need for students to stay updated with emerging trends and encouraged the exploration of research opportunities. She commended the initiative of conducting guest lectures and suggested that similar events should continue in the future for enhanced learning. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Umme Hajeera Fathima, the president of the BCA student association.
