Ambedkar Jayanti Observed by Department of Social Work

On April 13, 2026, the Department of Social Work organized an Ambedkar Jayanti observance to mark the contributions of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. The programme included a guest lecture and competitions such as Debate, Extempore, and Poetry Writing, with participation from students across disciplines.

The resource person for the guest lecture was Arvind Narrain, lawyer, founder of the Alternative Law Forum, visiting faculty at National Law School of India University and Azim Premji University, and President of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties. The session was inaugurated by Arvind Narrain, Vice Principal Mr. Vinod Kumar, and faculty members of the Department of Social Work through a plant-watering ceremony.

The inaugural address was delivered by Mr. Vinod Kumar, who spoke on the importance of rights and referred to the life and work of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. He also referred to the role of reading in shaping leadership and mentioned the influence of experiences, such as discrimination, on leaders, citing Mahatma Gandhi.

Arvind Narrain delivered a lecture on ‘The Indian Constitution as an Ambedkarite Constitution: Vision, Values, and Contemporary Relevance.’ He discussed constitutional morality and outlined values such as justice, liberty, and equality. He also explained the legal framework before and after Independence and referred to the role of the Constitution in addressing social hierarchy and inequality. The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment, followed by competitions in Debate and Extempore.
